Apple Prepares Major Redesign for iPhone 18 Pro Lineup with Under-Display Face ID and Foldable Innovation on the Horizon

Apple is reportedly preparing for a dramatic redesign of its iPhone lineup, with the iPhone 18 Pro models expected to feature a major technological leap—under-display Face ID. According to reports from industry insiders and display analyst Ross Young, the Cupertino tech giant plans to eliminate the iconic Dynamic Island notch in favor of a more seamless, edge-to-edge screen experience.

Under-Display Face ID: A Game Changer

For years, Apple has been working behind the scenes to integrate its advanced Face ID sensors directly beneath the display. This shift would mark a significant evolution in iPhone design, allowing the company to offer a truly immersive screen with thinner bezels and more usable display area. With the Face ID hardware no longer requiring a visible notch or pill-shaped cutout, Apple will be able to move towards a much sleeker and modern front-facing design.

The iPhone 18 Pro models, slated for release in September 2026, are expected to feature a small, discrete hole-punch cutout in the top-left corner of the display solely for the front camera. This subtle design tweak signals the end of the Dynamic Island—at least for the Pro models—though it’s currently unclear whether this change will extend across the entire iPhone lineup.

While the fate of  Dynamic Island on non-Pro models remains uncertain, sources suggest that Apple may continue to offer it on certain variants, possibly as a way to differentiate between the standard and high-end models.

A New iPhone Lineup: Air, Pro, and Foldable

In addition to the under-display technology, Apple is also said to be expanding its iPhone range with the introduction of new models. Notably, the iPhone 18 Air is expected to debut alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and a brand-new foldable iPhone—marking Apple’s first venture into the foldable smartphone market.

These three models are all tipped to be unveiled in September 2026, making that year’s launch lineup the most diverse Apple has ever released. Each device will target a distinct segment of users, from those seeking premium flagship performance to consumers desiring ultra-thin and lightweight designs, and even those curious about foldable innovation.

Meanwhile, the standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e models are rumored to follow in Spring 2027, potentially giving Apple a more staggered and year-round iPhone release schedule.

iPhone 17 Air to Launch First

Before the iPhone 18 lineup reshapes Apple’s smartphone strategy, the company is expected to introduce the first-ever iPhone Air model with the upcoming iPhone 17 series, due in September 2025. This move appears to signal Apple’s broader effort to diversify its product offerings and naming conventions—possibly mirroring the naming strategy used in the iPad and MacBook lines.
